This work was first published in Royal Society of Chemistry Historical Group newsletter and summary of papers, Winter 2019, 75, 21-31 (hard copy), 11-16 (online).  The linked text is as put online in 2020 on the site hosted by Forschungs-Neutronenquelle Heinz Maier-Leibnitz (FRM II): https://neutronsources.org/media/harwell_old_and_new___a_perspective_by_michael_jewess_dec19.pdf. Compared with the original, there are cosmetic improvements (white spaces eliminated, the box on page 2 formalised).  In addition, the discussion of MRC, RAL, PHE, and Diamond has been expanded (page 5, “An important point ...” to end of page), and paragraph immediately following Fig. 5 on page 6).  However, no attempt has been made to update the article beyond its original creation date of August 2018.

Abstract

In the context of the UK nuclear energy programme, the history is described of AERE Harwell from 1946 and AEA Technology until the latter went into administration in 2012.  The site is currently undergoing a renaissance as the “Harwell Campus”.
